O grupo surgiu em Londres no fim da década de 1970, quando quatro músicos uniram seus talentos para transformar ensaios simples em algo de grande alcance. Com poucos recursos e muita vontade, começaram tocando em bares, onde o som limpo das guitarras e o estilo narrativo do vocalista chamaram a atenção. Rapidamente conquistou espaço nas rádios, destacando-se pela sobriedade em meio ao excesso sonoro da época.

Ao longo dos anos seguintes, consolidou-se como uma das formações britânicas mais respeitadas do rock. O som era ao mesmo tempo técnico e emocional, conquistando tanto críticos quanto fãs de diferentes gerações. O vocal característico e as harmonias de guitarra tornaram-se uma assinatura reconhecível. A fama crescia sustentada pelo talento e pela seriedade do trabalho forjado por composições detalhistas e execuções precisas.
Com o sucesso, vieram as grandes turnês internacionais e o reconhecimento nos principais palcos do mundo. A banda demonstrava uma coesão admirável, mesmo diante das pressões típicas da indústria musical. As apresentações ao vivo revelavam músicos experientes, capazes de transformar cada canção em uma experiência envolvente. A sonoridade limpa e precisa destacava-se em uma era marcada por excessos e efeitos artificiais.
